Matchday 12: Second Group-Match Phase, Group C Wednesday 22 March 2000
Dynamo Kyiv
FC Bayern M?nchen
Olimpiyskyi Stadium, Kiev REPORT
Despite gaining revenge for last year's semi-final loss against FC Bayern M?nchen in the UEFA Champions's League with a 2-0 home win against the Germans, Dynamo Kyiv crashed out of this year's competition. The win proved insufficient as Real Madrid CF squeezed past Rosenborg BK with a 1-0 away win at the same time to secure their spot in the next stage.
A Bayern B team
Bayern, already assured of winning the group with 13 points, had arrived
in the Ukrainian capital without top players like Oliver Kahn, Markus Babbel,
Stefan Effenberg, Jens Jeremies, Bixente Lizarazu, Giovane Elber and Mehmet
Scholl and this handicap quickly seemed to tell as the German midfield
conceded possession far too easily to allow the home side to dominate central
midfield.
Serhii Rebrov and George Demetradze squandered early chances to give
Dynamo a deserved lead as the Bayern defence looked shaky in the opening
stages and the visitors just couldn't settle into their usual stride as
the Ukrainian outsiders stepped up a gear to leave the visitors grasping
for air. Alexander Zickler, who had been chosen to skipper the Bayern side
due to his impressive performances of late, seemed to represent Bayern's
only threat up front and he nearly got on the scoreboard after 18 minutes
when he suddenly fired in a shot from 18 metres out only to see his brave
effort sneak wide off the target.
Dynamo were looking desperate as the frequency of their attacks increased
and they finally got off the mark in the 34th minute. Olexander Holovko
rose above defender Thorsten Fink to flick on a corner for the on-rushing
Kakha Kaladze, who was left with an easy job chesting the ball past substitute
keeper Andreas Wessels.
Demetradze delivers
Bayern started with more positive intent after the break and Paraguayan
import Santa Cruz signalled their offensive intent straight after the interval
when he conjured up an acrobatic overhead volley after Thomas Linke had
sliced Michael Tarnat's free-kick, but Olexander Shovkovsky showed his
agility with an amazing stop.
Then, in the 56th minute Bayern should have drawn level when Michael
Wiesinger shook of the challenge of Holovko to slice open the Ukraiinan
defence with a superb pass for the unmarked Antonio Di Salvo, but when
it seemed easier to score, the youngster sliced his effort high over the
bar. However, as the Germans failed to find the target, they seemed content
to play in second gear knowing that their quarter-final place had already
been secured. This allowed the hosts to regain their attacking composure
and they deservedly doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when the German
defence was caught napping, as Aleksandr Khatskevitch headed the ball back
from a Holovko free-kick to the unmarked Demetradze who finished the job
with a fantastic bicycle kick.
Grp C: Kiev Post-Match Reaction

FC Bayern M?nchen 0
Olimpiyskyi Stadium, Kiev REACTION
Olexsei MIHAELITCHENKO, Assistant Coach, Dynamo Kyiv:
"First of all let me on behalf of Dynamo congratulate FC Bayern Munchen
on their qualification to the quarter-final. In the UEFA Champions League
matches every mistake is punished. We lost too many points in autumn and
this prevented us from reaching the next round. But we earned 10 points
during spring and that was great. I am satisfied with the Kyiv"s
performence in this season. Though head coach Lobanovskiy is not feeling
well at the moment, we hope he will get better and help Dynamo reach new
hights next season
Franz BECKENBAUER, President, FC Bayern M?nchen:
"I think our team played very well and we were a lot closer to 1-1,
than Dynamo was to 2-0. We should have had a penalty in one situation,
but anyway I repeat I am happy with the performance of our team."
Ottmar HITZFELD, Head Coach, FC Bayern M?nchen:
"My players did whatever they had to, it was an excellent game from
our side. We took the initiative in the 2nd half and normally should have
scored and equalized. Especially Antonio Di Salvo had an excellent chance
to score, but he missed it. Let me congratulate Dynamo with a great victory,
they really deserved it. Kyiv played especially good in the first half.
We managed to create some good chances in the second and dominated quite
a long time, but the second goal was the decisive one. It"s a pity Kyiv
failed to quailify to the next round. I also would like to wish to Lobanovskiy
good health, I appreciate him very much as a professional and as a coach."
Kakha KALADZE, Dynamo Kyiv:
"I feel very sorry we did not qualify, but we came out today only to
win and we did it. During the match we did not want to know the result
of the other game. Of course we hoped, that Rosenborg would at least draw.
Maybe a little concolidation for us would be the forst goal by Demetradze.
He lacks a little experience, but George is a very talented and he will
surely reach great success."
Thorsten FINK, FC Bayern M?nchen:
"As I see the game - the draw would have been the correct result, especially
considering our second half performance. Then we really took the game into
our hands and were close to score few times. We lost because of two set
pieces, executed well by home team. Congratulations to Dynamo, they played
well."
Alexander ZICKLER, FC Bayern M?nchen:
"I feel so sad - I was so proud before the match to lead my team out
on the field as a captain and it ended so sadly. Now I have received a
hamstring injury on the back of my right thigh and it will obviously keep
me out for few weeks. Sadly, it willprobably prevent me to play for Germany
in a next week's international."
